Call for Stricter Border Checks in Nigeria’s North in the wake of Ebola

The governments of northern Nigerian border states of Sokoto and Kebbi, and Zamfara have announced plans to step up security and health checks in view of the current case of Ebola in Nigeria.

Speaking on the issue, Dr Awual Musa of the College of Medicine at Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, said, I wish to commend all governments at state levels to commence effective sensitization on Ebola. He added that sensitization is not about creating panic, but about making people aware of the current health realities in the country and the measures to follow to keep safe.

He reminded the audience of the experiences during Nigeria’s first Ebola outbreak in 2014 when people engaged in harmful practices, including drinking and bathing in salt water to prevent Ebola. He said many lives were lost due to these misguided practices.

He concluded by appealing for stricter checks both at airports and on the road borders.
